Dr. Robert Cantu, MD, a neurosurgeon and a consultant of the National Football League gave a lecture about chiropractic care at the recent Professional Football Chiropractic Society’s (PFCS) 6th Annual Educational Symposium. Each year, chiropractors around the country gather to attend this educational symposium. During this event, chiropractors and representatives from the NFL discuss how chiropractic care can help injured athletes recover faster.

Dr. Cantu, a leading expert in sports-related concussions have played a significant role in the development and implementation of standard practices for management of mild traumatic brain injury or MTBI. He gave a three-hour presentation regarding current research and standard practices for diagnosis and management of sports-related concussions to over 130 chiropractors and representatives from the NFL.

In his presentation, Dr. Cantu discussed the benefits of chiropractic care in giving relief to secondary complaints after a concussion. These include headaches, face reddening, sympathetic nervous discharge and burning facial pain. These effects can all be managed conservatively by a chiropractor.

The lecture was well received. In fact, Dr. Doug Miller, the team chiropractor for the Baltimore Ravens said that “Dr. Cantu’s lecture brings to the forefront the importance of proper technique, evaluation and management of concussions. We now have evidence that this type of injury can have long-lasting impairment and it is vital that concussed athletes of all ages have proper time for recovery.

Education and communication

It is vital that the benefits of chiropractic care and proper concussion management should be properly taught to all concerned.
